The Road is Everything

Taking a road trip is something special. It is actually that I have learned to appreciate. Many times we get really distracted by the stress of a trip: where to go, what to take, where to stop; besides the natural effects of a trip like tiredness, sleepiness and hunger. But if we learn how to deal with these things, a world of possibilities opens up.

After the wonderful experience of actually seeing a luge world cup, we continued on. It was dark and I was driving. The route had yet again changed. This time we were heading to Moab, Utah. Along the way you could see the moonlight on the snow covering the desert. The sky was a bit cloudy, but you could still see the moon light and beyond that, shooting stars. I am a city girl, so the first time that I saw a shooting star I was 16 years old and I started yelling and jumping out of excitement. Since then, I always get really excited when I see shooting stars. Driving at night paying that much attention to the road that you actually get to see shooting stars adds extra amazement to the trip. We made it to Moab. It was late and we were really tired. The net morning we woke up, had breakfast and decided to spend another night there. The last week in Monterey and the days before the trip were really tiring and we hadn’t had the chance to rest well. The hotel was really nice and it was two minutes away from Arches National Park. We took it easy. Around 1pm we headed to the park. I would love to be able to describe how magical the desert cover in snow is, but the best thing I can do is show you the pictures that I took. It was absolutely worth it to get out of our way to see it. Almost nobody was there. It was virtually Ben and I in front of the entire desert. We stopped in several places inside of the park to contemplate the rock formations. It only took a moment to close your eyes and feel the peace that only the desert can bring. You just hear the wind. Then you open your eyes again and you find yourself in front of natural wonders that you never thought you would see. We stopped at a place called Double Arch. We parked and walked to it. We even climbed it. I have never been in a place like that. It was a wonderful experience.

We went back to the hotel when the sun was about to set. We got there at the exact time to see the moon set right above the rocks when the sun was still touching their top.  Sometimes life is about that exact moment. We took a nap, had dinner and went to sleep. Today we took it easy again and hit the road at 11. This time the road took us to the Rocky Mountains. In some parts it was like we were traveling in a Christmas story: mountains covered in snow, a trying passing right next to a river. Beautiful. I even got to see big horned sheep and tumbleweed. The key is to be able to pay attention to the road.

We spent the day on the road. The moon was our true friend at night. We finally made it to Wyoming, a state where I have never been before. It received us with 50 miles/hour winds and a clear night.

By the way, we finally found an ice scraper in Colorado =).

  1. "We took a nap, had dinner and went to sleep."
Yet another pithy definition of 'vacation'!
